About music plant project and Ygg
Who?
Ygg is a cyber-tree creature, a cyber-plant, a cyborg.
Imagine the roots and branches hybridized as electrical wires. In the digital era, Ygg is a hybrid machine-plant entity that speaks through a Synth instrument. The name Ygg comes from Yggdrasil, the sacred tree in Norse mythology.
Mark S. is a composer and bass player
How?
We create music, connecting an electrical circuit based on the midi sprout code to the vegetation. This process is called Biosonification (known as Bio-data sonification or Bio-sonification). It involves turning the bio-rhythms of living organisms into notes and sound. We record the bio-data of trees, shrubs, flowers, or grass and convert the micro-currents measured across the leaves of the plants into music. A similar process can be applied to non-human organisms and humans to explore communication among living beings. Finally, songs are created from patterns of musical notes.
When?
The project was born in May 2021 using a modified version of the open-source circuit Midi Sprout. Ygg’s suggestions drove the creation of the circuit and the extension of the code.
Why?
To connect and communicate, collaborate and create music with other living beings. We are interested to explore new ways in music composition and production such as electronic bio-music.
